Presenters<\/strong><\/h3><p>For September\u2019s meeting we met again at Smitty\u2019s Pancake &amp; Steak House. Our guest speaker and presenter was Dave Wilding, his wife, and his bike.<a href=\"https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Presenter-Dave.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5113  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Presenter-Dave-150x150.png\" alt=\"Presenter Dave\" width=\"190\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p><p>He shared with us a little of his family history but mostly talked about his biking adventure, challenges, and spiritual experiences he encountered from the Canadian border through Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico to the Mexican border.<\/p><p>The distance can vary but averages about 3,000 miles following dirt roads, trails, gravel tracks, and occasionally short stretches of paved roads. The route he followed hugged the Continental Divide, hence the name of this trail route the Adventure Cycling Association created. One room contained a large assortment of quilts on display.<\/p><p>Another area was dedicated to the military, in particular the men and women from the Teton Valley who served in each of the wars with recognition for their service. We viewed various military artifacts, uniforms, tools, weapons, and photos that have been collected to make this an extensive tribute, filling two rooms, to those who served.<\/p><p><a sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The museum has an assortment of wagons, buggies, and horse drawn farm implements on display outside another large building dedicated to local agriculture.<\/p><p>All through the museum were many photos and placards with text describing the artifact, what it was used for, and who had contributed, or loaned it, to the museum. <a steam boiler for a steam engine powered sawmill.<\/p><p>After the visit, we gathered at a small sandwich shop across the highway for lunch.<\/p><p><a This museum houses our &#8220;Wagon Box Prophecy&#8221; monument artifacts. The owner claims he stopped counting how many he has after 350 that have been restored, or are in process of being restored. Providing them with information on Idaho History and Mining in Idaho. The kids (and adults) loved finding a favorite gem to keep.\u00a0<\/p><p>We have been watching the area around Idaho Falls for old wagons to restore and vintage horse drawn farm implements that can be cleaned up and displayed in the park. Plans for the Pioneer Village at the Homestead Park are on permanent hold. We are negotiating with the Park for a shed and an area to display old farming artifacts that have been cleaned and painted.<\/p><p>Earlier this year, the Bonneville Eagle Rock Company of DUP asked for assistance to place Pioneer Heritage Flags next to the grave markers of local early pioneers at Ucon Cemetary. Much of the lumber was salvageable and can be used in future construction projects.<\/p><p>Plans are being finalized for our Spring Trek to Wagon Land, a pioneer wagon museum located near Tremonton, Utah. Other chapters have been invited to attend. Before leaving we will brown bag our lunch onsite.<\/p><p>The original Chapter Bylaws are nowhere to be found. Our Board has spent several hours laboring to develop current bylaws for the Eagle Rock Chapter. When completed, it will be brought before the Membership at a regular member meeting for ratification. His name was James Empey.<\/p><p>As a young teen he tended sheep all alone. Well one day, a bear stood up from behind some fallen trees. He took his rifle, aimed, and fired. The bear dropped behind the trees. Moments later, the bear stood up! Somewhat surprised, James took careful aim and again fired. Once more, the bear went down. As he started toward the bear, it stood up. Once again, he fired a shot and the bear went down. After waiting some time, the bear did not stand up again so he went to investigate. Yes indeed, the bear was dead. And so where the other two bears lying next to it.<\/p><p>Var told of another story where grandfather was tending the flock and started to get very sick. He started off to town for help several miles away but had to turn back, convinced he wouldn&#8217;t make it alive. Not knowing what else to do, he made his way back into his sheep wagon to lie down.<br \/>Soon after, a small group of Indians visited his camp. The women were overcome by the stench coming from inside the wagon. They all left, but the woman and two young girls soon returned with herbs and medicine which he was told to drink ALL of it. He thought sure his belly would burst but he drank it all. Eventually his strength returned and found the women had left.<\/p><p>Later in his life he became an early Bonneville County Deputy Sheriff. He has studied the heritage of Mountain Men since the early days of this nation. How they lived, and the tools they used. Adam brought with him furs, early coins, traps, arrowheads, knife, tomahawk, period dress, possibles bag, and much more that he passed around for us to see and handle. <a href=\"https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LongBow.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3610 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LongBow-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LongBow-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/eaglerocksup.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/LongBow.jpg 432w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>His long bow was made by a member of a tribe in the eastern states. He demonstrated how to string it for use. Unfortunately, he was not able to bring and show his Hawkins black powder rifle into the facility so a picture had to suffice.
